This training series is a group of eight, on-demand training videos designed to prepare attorneys to file child protection appeals, understand MN rules, statutes, and caselaw, draft effective arguments, gain insight into the perspective of the Bench, and implement a trauma-informed approach to working with their clients. ITCP recognizes the gap in legal representation for families in appellate child welfare proceedings. This training aims to support those already practicing in this area and to increase the number of attorneys able to take on these cases.

Contributing presenters include:

  • Senior Judge John Rodenberg of the Minnesota Court of Appeals
  • Judge Reilly of the Minnesota Court of Appeals
  • Judge Theodora Gaïtas of the Minnesota Court of Appeals

Representing Kin in Child Protection Proceedings

This training series is a resource for attorneys who wish to represent relatives and kin in child welfare proceedings. There are very few attorneys in Minnesota who do this work and the ITCP seeks to develop attorneys who can contribute to this critical access to justice.

Too often relatives who could provide safe and stable homes to system-involved children they love struggle to navigate the complexities of the legal system and / or are prematurely disregarded and dismissed from placement consideration. Trauma-informed legal counsel who represent kin can help keep children connected to their families and communities.

The videos in this series are a foundational guide to representing relatives at all stages of child welfare proceedings before filing of a CHIPS petition through post-permanency. They include:

  • Pre-Petition Legal Consideration
  • CHIPS Overview
  • Pre-Permanency Representation
  • Representing Kin on Appeal
  • Post-Permanency Court Advocacy
  • Keeping Families Together through Kinship Support
  • Resilient Practice
  • Trauma-Informed Lawyering

Cost: $65, plus associated fees

CLE Credit: Approved for 4.5 standard and 1.25 ethics CLE credits from the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education
